After the supply of medium is stopped, the disk smoothly closes under the influence of its own weight, which creates a closing moment due to the displacement of the center of gravity of the disk valve relative to the axis of rotation. The counterweight keeps the disc fully open, reducing flow resistance, and also promotes better sealing when closed at low pressure.
